Solution

The correct option is C III
Noise pollution can be defined as a disturbing and unwanted sound that harms humans or wildlife. Noise is generated by mining operations, drillings, blastings, excavations, crushings, vehicular traffic, use of generators, etc.

Noise constantly surrounds people but as it cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled it receives less attention but can have a major impact on humans.

Some of the major effects of noise pollution are as follows :
  • Hypertension : Long exposure to loud noise can lead to elevated blood levels, hypertension (raised blood pressure) and several cardiovascular diseases in a normal person.
  • Hearing disability: Prolonged exposure to loud noise beyond the normal range can damage the eardrums, thus resulting in hearing disability. For example, a brief exposure to extremely high sound levels like noise during a take off of a jet plane or rocket which is around 150 dB or more can permanently impair hearing ability. Hence statements I and IV are correct.
  • Sleeping disorders: Sleep cycle of an individual is also affected due to noise produced at night. This may lead to sleeping disorders, low energy levels, fatigue and loss of concentration.
  • It becomes difficult to communicate with one another and study in case there is a very loud sound in the neighbourhood. Hence statement II is correct.
Planting of trees can muffle (cover) noises and prevent noise pollution. Trees act as barriers for noise by absorbing sound waves via stem, leaves, branches and wood (due to rough and thick bark and surface area). So statement III is incorrect and hence option c is correct.
