Solution

The correct option is C I - T, II - T, III - F, IV - T
Noise is an unwanted, undesirable sound. Noise pollution can be defined as a disturbing and unwanted sound that harms humans or wildlife.

Exposure to high intensity sound or prolonged exposure to noise can affect the health of humans and other animals.

To control noise pollution in residential areas the following measures can be taken :
  • Industries should be set up away from residential areas.
  • Use of sound-absorbent materials or by muffling (covering) noise using ear defenders, plugs or headphones that can limit sound exposure at industries.
  • The areas around schools and hospitals should be horn free. Such areas are called horn-free zones. Hence statement II is true.
  • During festivals and marriages the sound levels of music and crackers should be under permissible limits. Keeping a time frame for the use of loudspeakers and crackers is necessary. Hence statement III is false and statement IV is true.
  • The CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) has set fines between Rs. 1,000 - Rs. 1,00,000 for those who violate norms restricting noise pollution under Noise pollution (regulation and control) rules, 2000. It should be strictly followed. For example, honking at odd hours contributes to noise pollution and violation of the law. This can lead to payment of heavy fines. Hence statement I is true.
  • Old vehicles and machines should be maintained properly which usually produce a lot of noise.
  • Planting more and more trees along the roadside helps in controlling the noise pollution as they serve as good sound absorbers.
