Question
Read the passage below carefully and answer the question that follows.
The knowledge and skills acquired by chimpanzees in their natural habitats are retained in long-term memory. In humans, a distinction is made between two categories of long-term memory: declarative (explicit) memory and procedural (implicit) memory. Declarative memory stores factual and episodic information. Procedural memory makes it possible to recall how to do things, such as swimming. From my own observations in the field, I am persuaded that chimpanzees in the wild possess both categories of long-term memory. A more rigorous experimental approach is needed to determine precisely what kinds of memories are retained by chimpanzees, and how similar or different those might be to the memories of humans.
