Solution

The correct option is C sugar and phosphate groups
According to the Watson and Crick model of DNA structure, DNA is composed of two antiparallel polynucleotide chains ( 5' → 3' and 3' → 5') wrapped around each other in a helical fashion.

The polynucleotide chains are formed of multiple nucleotide (composed of deoxyribose sugar, phosphate and nitrogenous base) units which are joined by phosphodiester bonds. The backbone of the chains are made up of the sugar and phosphate groups whereas the nitrogenous bases are projected inwards. Hence option c is correct.
