The specific reactivity shown by an organism to an antigenic stimulus is called immune response. It is of two types, they are the primary immune response and secondary immune response.
  • Primary immune response: The immune response shown by the organism as a result of the first encounter with an antigen. It takes a relatively longer time to respond to the antigen and is of low intensity.
  • Secondary immune response: A subsequent encounter by the immune system with the same antigen results in an elevated immune response, which is rapid and lasts for a longer period. This is due to the fact that first encounter appears to have memory of the first encounter. Hence, memory B cells produced during primary response respond quickly and produce a large number of antibodies.
