Sericulture

  1. The rearing, breeding and management of silkworms for the production of silk is known as sericulture or silk farming.
  2. It is an agro-based, labour-oriented small scale industry.
  3. The silk moth, Bombyx mori, is the insect which provides silk yarn.
  4. The larvae or caterpillars of this insect, called silkworms, feed on mulberry leaves.
  5. When fully grown, larvae secrete cocoons around them and change into pupae (sing. pupa).
  6. The cocoons are immersed in boiling water to kill pupae living inside.
  7. We obtain silk from the dead cocoons by reeling.
  8. Four varieties of silk - mulberry, tassar, mugga and eri are produced in India.
