Chemical nature of hormones:

Chemically hormones are of the following types:
  • Steroid hormones: Derived from cholesterol.
    Example: Progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, cortisol.
  • Peptide/ protein hormones: Derived from proteins.
    Example: Oxytocin, glucagon, insulin, pituitary hormones etc.
  • Amino acid hormones: Derived from amino acids like tyrosine. Example- Epinephrine.
  • Iodothyronines: Iodinated hormones.
    Example: Thyroid hormones.

Amino acid derivative-Epinephrine:

Epinephrine and norepinephrine are derived from an amino acid known as tyrosine. Hence, they are referred to as amino acid derivative hormones.


Steroid - Progesterone:

Progesterone is a steroid hormone because it is derived from cholesterol.


Protein - Growth hormone:

Numerous protein hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland. Example: Growth hormone, Thyroid-stimulating hormone.


Peptide - Oxytocin:

Considerable hormones secreted by the hypothalamus are peptide hormones.
Example: Antidiuretic hormone [ADH], oxytocin.
