The breakdown of glucose to pyruvic acid is called gylcolysis. It occurs in the cytoplasm of cell. But the aerobic respiration takes place within the mitochondria. RBCs lack mitochondria and so it cannot carry out aerobic respiration but can carry out glycolysis in the cytoplasm.
