Solution

Reduction:

  1. Reduction is a process in a chemical reaction in which a chemical species acquires electrons and its oxidation number lowers.
  2. It is the removal of oxygen from a substance or the addition of hydrogen to it.
  3. A substance that undergoes reduction is referred to as an oxidizing agent. It is also called an electron acceptor. The oxidizing agent oxidizes the other reactant while reducing itself.
  4. Example: Zn(s)Zinc+2H+(aq)HydrogenZn2+(aq)Zinc+H2(g)HydrogenHere reduction of hydrogen takes place as its oxidation number changes from +1 to 0

Therefore, Reduction is a process in which a substance loses electrons or its oxidation number decreases.
