Let the total pages of the book be x.
According to the question, $\frac{1}{5} x + 40 = \frac{7}{10} x$
[1 mark]
$\Rightarrow 40 = \frac{7}{10} x - \frac{1}{5} x = \frac{7 x - 2 x}{10} \Rightarrow 40 = \frac{5 x}{10} \Rightarrow x = \frac{400}{5} = 80$
$∴$ Total pages of a book $= 80$
[1 mark]
Hence pages lef to be read = total pages of a book- $(\frac{7}{10} x)$
$= 80 - \frac{7}{10} \times 80$
$= 80 - 56 = 24$ pages
