Secondary sexual characters are caused by the male and female hormones Testosterone and Oestrogen respectively.
The adenohyphophysis or the pituitary gland produces gonadotropins (FSH and LH) which stimulate the male and female reproductive organs to produce hormones. In females, they are responsible for the production of oestrogen and progesterone which control the menstrual cycle and also are responsible for the secondary sexual characters during puberty.
In males, FSH stimulates the formation of spermatozoa and LH stimulates the Leydig cells to produce testosterone, the male hormone.
