Question

Refractive indices of crown glass and flint glass are 1.52 and 1.66, respectively. Find
the ratio of speed of light in crown glass to speed of light in flint glass. The speed of
light in air is 3 x 108 ms-1.

Solution

Dear Student,
Refractive index n=speed of light in vaccum(c)÷speed of light in medium(v)

n1 of crown glass=1.52

1.52 = c/(speed of light in crown glass)

n2 of flint glass=1.66

So, 1.66=c/ (speed of light in flint glass)

(speed of light in crown glass) / (speed of light in flint glass ) =1.66 / 1.52

=1.092
