When glucose in the blood increases, the beta cells produce insulin. Insulin converts glucose to glycogen in the liver and muscles. In the same way, when there is a decrease in the level of glucose in the blood, glucagon uses the glycogen stored in the liver and the muscles and converts it into glucose to be used by the body. Glucagon is secreted by alpha cells.​
