Enzymes in the body of every organism act as biological catalysts for most of the chemical reactions that make the life processes happen. Enzymes are made up of proteins. In addition, many proteinaceous molecules such as haemoglobin and keratin play important roles in a living organism. Thus, proteins are very important biomolecules for a living organism. However, in addition to proteins, there are also RNA enzymes called ribozymes, which carry out some of the important catalytic reactions in the body. An example of one such reaction is the linkage of amino acids during protein synthesis, which is catalysed by rRNA (thus, acting as ribozyme here) in the large ribosomal subunit.
