During transcription, one of the two DNA strands of the double helix acts as a template for the synthesis of mRNA. This is known as the template strand or antisense strand, and runs along the 3’-5’ direction. The other DNA strand which runs in the 5’-3’ direction is known as the coding strand or sense strand. This appears exactly like the newly transcribed mRNA strand (except that ‘T’ and ‘U’ would differ respectively).
