Tar is a sticky brown substance present in cigarette smoke. Tar that enters the lungs along with cigarette smoke sticks and obstructs their movement. Beating of cilia is responsible for throwing out pathogens trapped in the mucus out of our respiratory tract. Due to paralysis of cilia, mucus starts getting accumulated in the respiratory tract. The mucus glands also start secreting copious amounts of mucus that gets accumulated in the air passage. Pathogens thus find a conducive environment to multiply, causing further damage to the lungs.
