Solution

Mercury:

  1. Mercury or quicksilver is a chemical element that is the only common metal that can be liquid at room temperature. It is a heavy silvery-white liquid metal.
  2. Atomic mass of mercury is200.59μ, and has a low melting point i.e.-38.9°C
  3. Relative density of a substance is defined to be the ratio of the density of that substance to the density of water.
  4. Formula for relative density =densityofsubstancedensityofwater
  5. Mercury's relative density with respect to water is=13.6gml-11gml-113.6 at 20°C
  6. It is also corrosive and has qualities that are dangerous to the environment and workplace.
  7. Mercury is a reactive element with a modest level of activity. It is unaffected by atmospheric oxygen. When acids are hot, it reacts with them, but most cold acids do not.
  8. Mercury is utilized in the manufacture of light bulbs and batteries. It is a component of electrical switches, it is also found in pesticides and rat poisons and it is also useful in medicine.
