Simplification rule: If there is a $" - "$ sign before a bracket, then the signs of all the terms inside the bracket changes but if there is a $“ + ”$ sign before the bracket, then no change of signs.
$\begin{array}{rcl} - 5 (3 z - 1) + 7 (2 z - 4) & = & - 15 z + 5 + 14 z - 28 \\ = & - 15 z + 14 z - 28 + 5 \\ = & - z - 23 \end{array}$
Therefore, the simplifies expression is $- z - 23$ .
