Restriction enzymes can cut the DNA into fragments at specific sites known as the restriction sites. These restriction sites (recognition site) are unique sequences of 4 or 6 base pair length. E.g: the restriction enzyme called EcoRI cuts the DNA fragments at the site having the sequence GAATTC.
