Question

Resistance spot welding of two steel sheets is carried out in lap joint configuration by using a welding current of 3kA and a weld time of 0.2s. A molten weld nugget of volume 20mm3 is obtained. The effective contact resistance is 200μΩ.

The material properties of steel are given as

(i) latent heat of melting 1400kJ/kg,
(ii) density 8000kg/m3,
(iii) melting temp 1520oC
(iv) specific heat 0.5kJ/kgoC.

The ambient Temperature is 20oC

Heat (Joules) dissipated to the base metal will be (neglecting all other heat losses)

Solution

The correct option is A 16
Given data :

I=3000A

t=0.2s

R=200μΩ

V=20mm3

Latent heat of melting,

L=1400kJ/kg

Density: ρ=8000kg/m3

Specific heat: C=0.5kJ/kgoC

Heat generated =I2RT=30002×200×106×0.2

=360J

Heat utilised for production of weld nugget

=m[L+cΔT]

=8000×20×109[1400+(1500×0.5)]×1000

=344J

Heat dissipated =360344=16J
