Resistors R1=10Ω, R2 = 40Ω, R3 = 30Ω, R4 = 20Ω, R5 = 60Ω and a 12V battery is connected as shown.


Calculate:
(a) the total resistance
(b) the total current flowing in the circuit. [3 MARKS]

Problem: 2 Marks

The situation is shown in (figure)



For R1 and R2 in parallel

1Rp1=1R1+1R2=110+140=540=18

or Rp1=8Ω

For R3,R4 and R5 is parallel

Rp2=10Ω

(a) For Rp1 and Rp2 in series.

Total resistance, R=Rp1+Rp2

Putting values, we get, R = 8 + 10 = 18

Total resistance, R = 18 Ω.

(b) From relation, (Ohm's law) R=VI

We have, I=VR

Putting values, we get, I = 0.67

Total current, I = 0.67 A
