Question

A rectangle whose area is 180 m2has its sides respectively diminished by 7 m and 4 m so as to form a square. Find the side of the square.

Open in App
Solution

Let the side of the rectangle be x and y

Area of the rectangle =length×breadth

xy=180 [ Area of rectangle =180 m2 (given) ]
x=180y

When the dimension of the given rectangle will be diminished by 7 m and 4 m, then it will become square.

Length will be reduced by 7 m, then side of square =x7 m

and, breadth will be reduced by 4 m, then side of square =y4 m

We know that the sides of a square are equal.

x7=y4

xy=3

180yy=3

y2+3y180=0

y2+15y12y180=0

y(y+15)12(y+15)=0

(y12)(y+15)=0

y=12 [ Length cannot be negative, y negative]

x=12+3=15

So, sides of the square =y5=124=8 m
