Respiration is a
Catabolic and exergonic process
Respiration involves the breakdown of complex food materials into simpler molecules. Hence, it is a catabolic process. It is also accompanied by the release of chemical energy (ATP), so it's an exergonic process also. This is in contrast to photosynthesis, that involves building up biomolecules utilizing energy from the surrounding sources and storing it inside the organic molecules. Therefore photosynthesis is an anabolic and endergonic process whereas respiration is a catabolic and exergonic process.
