Question

“Respiration is an exothermic reaction.” Justify this statement giving the chemical equation for the reaction involved.

Solution

Exothermic reactions

Reactions that involve the evolution of heat or energy are called exothermic reactions. In these reactions, the energy of the products will be less than that of the reactants and the excess energy is released in the form of heat.

Respiration

The carbohydrates in our food are decomposed into simple sugars like glucose by digestion. The glucose formed by digestion combines with Oxygen (O2) in cell and is converted into Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O). Energy is released during this process and is stored in the form of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The oxidation of glucose takes place during respiration and a large amount of heat is released. Therefore, respiration is considered as an exothermic process.

The chemical equation for the respiration reaction is:

C6H12O6s+6O2g6CO2g+6H2Ol+Heat

(Glucose) (Oxygen) (Carbon (Water) (Energy)

dioxide)
