Question

Respiration is the most important biochemical reaction which provides energy to the cells. Oxygen inhaled enters our lungs and is responsible for various body functions. Carbohydrate glucose undergoes combustion to release energy.

Write chemical equation representing the combustion of glucose.

Solution

Combustion of glucose:

A glucose molecule(C6H12O6) reacts with(O2) to form carbon dioxide(CO2) and water(H2O).

C6H12O6(s)+6O2(g)6CO2(g)+6H2O(l),H=-71kcal

Combustion of glucose is an exothermic reaction as energy is released.

Therefore, the above equation represents the combustion of glucose.
