Bacterial cells do not have membrane bound organelles like plastids and mitochondria. Their plasma membrane is however, infolded into mesosomes which carry respiratory enzymes and are known as mitochondria of bacteria. Another term used in literature is chondroids. They are believed to be the centres of respiratory activities. However, it has been shown that mesosomes are not analogous mitochondria as the respiratory enzymes are not limited to mesosomes only but are found dispersed throughout the membrane.
