  1. We can say an object is in state of rest or of motion relative to another object or its surroundings.
  2. An object is said to be moving if its position is changing with time with respect to its surroundings.
  3. If the position of an object is not changing with respect to its surroundings we can say it is at rest.
  4. Rest and motion are relative terms because they are based on observer's frame of reference.
  5. Consider a person sitting in a car, according to the car the person is at rest and according to the surroundings the person is at motion.

Hence, rest and motion are relative terms.
