  1. The intestine is a coil-like tube that is divided into two main parts- the small intestine and the large intestine.
    1. Small intestine:
      • The small intestine is the longest part of the digestive system and consists of three parts-duodenum, jejunum and ileum.
      • The inner surface of the small intestine is covered with numerous finger-like projections known as villi where absorption of digested nutrients takes place.
    2. Large intestine:
      • The large intestine is a coil-like tube that is connected to the small intestine at one end and to the anus at the other end.
      • It is a part of the alimentary canal which consists of three parts-cecum, the colon and the rectum. The undigested food from the small intestine passes into the large intestine.
      • The main function of the walls of the large intestine is to absorb water from the undigested food and to remove the faecal matter from the alimentary canal.
      • The process of elimination of undigested food materials from the body in the form of faeces is known as egestion.
