Ribs are connected to the spine (the backbone) in the back. In the front, the true ribs are connected directly to the breastbone or sternum by strips of cartilage called the costal cartilage. The scapula or shoulder blade is the bone that connects the humerus (upper arm bone) with the clavicle (collar bone). The ilium is the uppermost and largest part of the hip bone.
