Total number of chocolates he got on his birthday is 99+109

We align the numbers and add the like terms.
Ones place digit with ones place digit and tens place digit with tens place digit.

For adding these two numbers we need to add the like terms of both the digits together i.e. digits at ones place will be added together, digits at tens place will be added together and so on..

So, on adding Ones place digit first, we get
18 ones = 10 ones + 8 ones = 1 Ten + 8 ones
Therefore,
8 will remain at ones place and 1 ten will be shifted as carry to tens place.
Similiarly,
10 tens = 1 hundred
Therefore,
0 will remain at tens place and 1 hundred will be shifted as carry to hundreds place.
