Stilt roots are the adventitious roots that develop from the node of the stem near the base and grow downwards. They serve to provide mechanical support to the plant. For example- the maize. Some plants with tap roots system develop aerial roots from the horizontal branches of the stem that hang vertically downwards. They provide mechanical support to the plant and are called as prop roots. For example- Ficus bengalensis. Clinging roots arise from the stem base of the plant and enter crevices of the support to fix the epiphyte and provide the plant with mechanical support. Plank roots are horizontal roots grow vertically upwards and curve in a snake like fashion giving a plank-like appearance coming outwards from the trunk base.
