Solution
The correct option is B Imbibition Imbibition is physical adsorption of water molecules onto the adsorbing surface. Seed absorb water due to imbibition. The imbibition of water is the first step in seed germination. Imbibant holds water through the processes of capillarity and adsorption. The dry adsorbent has a highly negative water potential. As it comes in contact with water, a steep water potential gradient is created. Water rapidly diffuses into adsorbent till an equilibrium is established. The amount of imbibition is influenced by the texture of imbibant, affinity of imbibant, temperature, pressure, electrolytes and pH. For example, the rubber will not imbibe water but will readily imbibe ether.
