Solution

Explanation: 3 Marks

For rusting, the presence of both oxygen and water is essential.

In coastal areas the content of moisture in air is extremely high. this means that the air is saturated with water molecules so much so that humidity exists to nearly 93 to 94%. In desert areas the amount of water content in the atmosphere is very very low, to a dismal 10 to 11 %. Rust can only form when both moisture and oxygen is present in the air. In the desert areas there isnt enough moisture, hence the nails remain relativley rust free compared to coastal areas where both water and oxygen are present in abundance hence rusting is rampant.
