‘Saheli’ is the world’s first non steroidal contraceptive pill. It is known as once a week pill. In the initial 3 months, it is advised to be taken twice per week. After the passage of 3 months, it can be taken once in a week. It can be taken on any day of the week.
Steroidal contraceptive pills are designed to be taken over a period of 28 days. The pill is taken daily for a period of 21 days starting preferably within the first 5 days of the menstrual cycle. Then a gap of 7 days is maintained (when the menstruation occurs). After the gap, the pattern is repeated again.
Hormonal preparations in the form of injectables are to be taken once in 3 months.
Spermicidal creams are applied deep in the vagina and cervix before sexual contact. It is not to be washed immediately after sex. It must stay till 5-6 hours after sex, so has to be reapplied after 3-4 hours.
