Idea of religion His aim was to propagate a religion of love, uniting people of all castes and religion.​ He preached religious tolerance and universal brotherhood.
Middle path He was not in favour of forsaking family life for accepting sainthood. He promoted a middle path which permitted spiritual life along with familial responsibilities.
Monotheism and idol worship He rejected idol worship, pilgrimages and baths in holy rivers. He believed in monotheism and vehemently opposed idol worship and pilgrimages.
Focus on humanity He was focused on the unity of humanity and opposed caste system and untouchability. He instructed his followers to eat from the common kitchen (lunger), which was open to people of all religions and castes.
