Salk vaccine or Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) is administered to provide immunity against poliomyelitis. It was developed in 1955 by Dr. Jonas Salk. IPV consists of killed poliovirus strains of all the three common types of the poliovirus. IPV is given by intramuscular or intradermal injection and needs to be administered by a trained health worker.
