Question

Saloni took a piece of burning charcoal and collected the gas evolved in a test tube.
(a) How will she find the nature of the gas ?
(b) Write down word equations of all the reactions taking place in this process

Open in App
Solution

(a)
  • Transfer the collected gas to a solution of water.
  • Now the solution should be tested with both red and blue litmus paper.
  • Test the solution with blue litmus and red litmus.
  • The blue litmus will change from blue to red.
Thus, the gas is acidic in nature.

(b)
  • Charcoal when burned in the air, it forms carbon dioxide. The reaction is as follows:C(Charcoal )+O2(Oxygen)CO2(Carbon dioxide)
  • When water is added to the carbon dioxide gas then it forms carbonic acid that turns blue litmus paper into red. The reaction is as follows:

(CO2+ water H2CO3(Carbonic acid)
