Sant Gadge was a social reformer. He was born in 1876 in a washerman's family in Amravati, Maharashtra. He lived his life in poverty and wandered to villages promoting social justice and initiating reforms relating especially to sanitation. The values of community-sharing and giving, which were given to him after a sadhu's remark remained with him for the rest of his life. His teachings were simple- offer nourishment to the hungry and have to the poor and protect the environment. Gadge Baba influenced society with his philosophy of self-reliance and community sharing. Clean surroundings, self-help schemes, use of fuel-saving devices, increased environmental awareness and strengthening of women's groups are some of them.
As soon as Gadge Baba entered a village he would start cleaning the roads and gutters and tell people that their felicitation would have to wait until his work was done. From the money obtained he built an educational institution, dharamshalas, hospitals, and animal shelters. He remains a source of inspiration for various political parties and non- governmental organisation.
