The sarcolemma is a specialized membrane which surrounds striated muscle fiber cells. It consists of a lipid bilayer typical of a plasma membrane and a thin outer coat of polysaccharide material called glycocalyx that contacts the basement membrane and allows the cell to anchor into the tissues that build and support muscle fibers. (figure-1)


Smooth muscle fibers have a limited calcium-storing SR but have calcium channels in the sarcolemma that opens during the action potential along the sarcolemma.(figure-2)


Cardiac muscle is highly branched with cells connected by overlapping projections of the sarcolemma called intercalated discs.(figure-3)
