Solution

Human respiratory system:

  1. The main function of the respiratory system is to conduct the exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen between the blood and the external environment.
  2. The path of the passage of air in the human respiratory system is

Nose → Pharynx → Larynx → Trachea → Bronchi → Lungs → Alveoli

Nose:

  1. The nose is the part of the respiratory system from which the air enters and passes through the nasal cavity to reach the pharynx.

Pharynx:

  1. The pharynx is the common passage for food and air.
  2. It is present behind the mouth, nose, and larynx.

Larynx:

  1. The larynx is the upper part of the trachea and is also called the voice box.
  2. The opening of the larynx is protected by a muscular flap called the epiglottis.

Trachea:

  1. The trachea, also known as the windpipe, functions as the airway and connects the larynx to the bronchi of the lungs.

Bronchi/Bronchus:

  1. Bronchi are the main respiratory airways found in the lungs.
  2. They are responsible for the conduction and cleaning of the air present in the respiratory pathway.

Lungs:

  1. Lungs are present in the thoracic cavity and are responsible for respiration in humans.
  2. They also have a significant role in the protection of the body against infection from pathogens.

Alveoli

  1. Alveoli are cup-shaped structures that provide the site of gaseous exchange between the lungs and the blood.
