Question

Seawater at a frequency f=9×102 Hz, has permittivity ε=80ε0 and resistivity ρ=0.25 Ωm. Imagine a parallel plate capacitor is immersed in seawater and is driven by an alternating voltage source V(t)=V0 sin(2πft). Then, the conduction current between the plates becomes 10x times the displacement current after time t=1/800 s. The value of x (integer only) is

Solution

The displacement current is given by

Id=εAddVdt

Id=εAdd[V0sin(2πft)]dt

Id=εAV0×2πfdcos(2πft) .......(1)

The condcution current between the plates is given by

IC=VρdA (R=ρdA)

IC=V0Asin(2πft)ρd .......(2)

From eqn (1) and (2)

IdIC=ε×2πf×ρ cot(2πft)

Here,
ε=80ε0; t=1/800 s; ρ=0.25 Ωm

f=9×102 Hz

IdIC=80×14π×9×109×2π×9×102×0.25×cot(2π×9×102×1800)

IdIc=106

IC=106 Id

x=6
