Mineralocorticoids such as aldosterone, are steroid hormones secreted from adrenal cortex. They maintain electrolyte balance in body by stimulating the absorption of sodium. Release of mineralocorticoids is stimulated by ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone). ACTH is secreted from anterior lobe of pituitary gland. It stimulates blood supply to adrenal cortex, increases concentration of cholesterol and steroids in the gland and thus, increases the output of steroid hormones.
