Question

See in the photo . The point (c) is note is contradicting the point (d) Strain In Metals. Explain in detail that what is the logic ??
c. Presence of air and moisture . Air and moisture accelerate corrosion. Presence of gases such as SO2 and CO2 in air catalyze the process of corrosion. Iron when placed in vaccum does not rust.
d. Strains in metals. Electrolytes, if present, also increase the rate of corrosion. For example, iron rusts faster in saline water than in pure water.

Solution

Dear Student,

No, the two statements donot contradict each other. In (c) point of Notes, it is given that rusting is formed at sites other than the site where pitting has occurred. Pitting is a damaging form of corrosion which degrades the metal. It is localised rusting which leads to formation of cavity or pit on the metal. So, if pitting has occurred at a site, then corrosion will not occur there. It will occur at sites different than the pit. In (d) point i.e. strains in metals, the sites i.e. bends, scrates , nicks are not pits. They are different and sites where corrosion has not occured.
