Seeds obtained by hybridization combine advantages, disadvantages and some other mixed qualities of both the parent plants. How are the seeds with desirable qualities obtained?
Artificial selection is applied.
When hybridization is done, we get a batch of seeds with combined qualities of the parent plants. These qualities may be desired, non-desired or mixed. Then, the scientists sow the seeds and allow all of them to grow to see the qualities like fruits maturity duration etc. Out of the lot, only a few with the most desirable qualities are selected and bred separately to get more seeds from them. Such kind of selection procedures is carried out a few more times till the new variety consistently shows the desirable characteristics. This whole process is known as artificial selection. So, hybridization is followed, always, by artificial selection. Thus, human interference for the selection is called artificial selection.
