After the Partition in 1947, the jute industry centred around Kolkata was hit severely. This was because most of the jute producing areas went to East Pakistan, i.e., present day Bangladesh; while most of the jute mills were left in India. This fragmented Bengal's jute economy.

Today, India is the largest producer of raw jute and jute goods, but in terms of exports, it stands in second place after Bangladesh.
