Solution

Electrolysis is a process of dissociation of a compound into ions on the passing of electric current into an electrolytic solution.

Electrolysis of copper sulphate (CuSO4):

CuSO4(aq)Cu2+(aq)+SO42-(aq)coppercoppersulphatesulphateionion

At anode: Oxidation of hydroxide ions (OH-) occur by lose of electrons.

OH-OH+e-

2OH-H2O+12O2+2e-hydroxidewateroxygenion

At cathode: Reduction of Cu2+ ions occur by gain of two electrons.

Cu2++2e-Cucoppercopperionatom

So, OH-ion is discharged at anode and Cu2+ is discharged at cathode.
