  • Members of the class Phaeophyceae are also known as brown algae. This group which is made up of largely multicellular algae is characterised by the brown colour due to the presence of the pigment called as fucoxanthin. Other characteristics that distinguish these are the presence of laminarin, mannitol and oils as their reserve food materials.
  • Rhodophyceae or the red algae imparts a red colour to the thallus includes more than 4000 species. Most red algae are multicellular and marine species and contain phycoerythrin which gives the red colour.
