It appealed to the masses. The angry mob picketed shops selling foreign goods, peasants refused to pay land rents, liquor shops were destroyed.
As the situation became out of control, the British were forced to find a way to please the Indian nationalists. This time they tried to please the nationalists by passing the Government of India Act in 1935. This act provided greater power to the local governments and it introduced direct elections. The Congress procured a thunderous victory in the 1937 elections. However, Congress ministers resigned from the office as Britain decided to involve India in the Second World War without their consent.
