Solution

The correct option is D I–r, ii–q, iii–s, iv–p

Syphilis is a bacterial disease caused by Treponema pallidum which usually spreads by making sexual contact with the infected person. It starts with a painless sore –typically on the genitals, mouth or rectum. The disease spreads to people when they come in contact with infected skin sores.

Chancroid is caused by a bacterium called Haemophilus ducreyi which is a STD characterised by pain during urination or intercourse. It also has painful necrotizing genital ulcers.

Acquired Immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a syndrome caused by the HIV virus that interferes with the body's ability to fight infections.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes a sexually transmitted disease called Genital warts. The characteristic symptom consists of a small bump on the genitals.

One interesting point to note here is the difference between chancroid and chancres. Chancres occur as a symptom of syphilis while chancroid is a symptom of chancroid itself that occurs by infection with Haemophilus ducreyi . Usually, chancres are painless, don't discharge pus, and occur as red lesions while chancroids are often painful, discharge pus and blood, and grey to yellowish lesions.
