The tissues which are neither dermal nor vascular are called as ground tissues. Based on the nature of the cell wall the ground tissue is divided into 3 types parenchyma, collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
Parenchyma consists of thin-walled cells with large intercellular spaces between them. Its function is storage, photosynthesis etc.
Collenchyma cells have thin primary walls with some areas of irregular secondary thickening at corners of the cell wall. It provides extra mechanical and structural support, particularly in regions of new growth thus helps in flexibility in plants.
Sclerenchyma cells have thick lignified cell walls and have pits. It provides the main structural support to a plant.
